“Love is the opposite of control, love demands trust" -Glennon Doyle. We have been taught we can't trust our own bodies. That we need to be told what to eat, how much to eat and when to eat. Control, control, control. Love. What if we loved ourselves to know that we can trust ourselves.

That it is only by implementing control that we feel out of control because we were never meant to be controlled. I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again. We will never be free by implementing control.

Wanting food is like a warning light on the dashboard of your car. Sometimes that warning light wanting food is hunger. Other times the want for food is a warning sign for something else.

For example: Are you extremely overwhelmed and are using food to decompress and cope? Are you lonely and seeking comfort in food? Are you not eating enough during the day and are simply hungry at night? Getting annoyed at warning light on the dashboard or even just ignoring it won’t make it go away. Get curious about your hunger.

You might have woken up this morning with the plan to ‘get back on track’ after a big day of eating yesterday. Here is what your brain hears: “we are going into a famine and food will be scarce”.

It is absolutely okay to focus on eating foods that make you feel good such as more nutritious options today but do it from a positive and loving space and not one of punishment and restriction. Restricting and drowning yourself in shame around your eating will only produce negative actions not positive ones.

Cookies, cakes, pies and all the holiday foods! It can sometimes be anxiety producing being around so many food items that we often don’t have access to throughout the year. 

What helps? Try saying:

“I have permission to eat x (insert name of food), do I feel like eating x?”

Restriction creates rebellion and allowance creates space for choice. But regardless of if you end up eating everything but the kitchen sink, it’s just food, your body knows how to balance and regulate so no stress, let yourself enjoy the holidays!! Merry Christmas!

The holidays can be stressful. Give yourself permission to take a few moments to yourself. Even if that means heading to the bathroom for 5 minutes to simply check in with yourself.

Tip. Do some light breathing exercises to feel more grounded and reduce stress.

Try this now.  Inhale through your nose for the of 4, hold for the count of 4, exhale through the mouth for the count of 4 and hold for the count of 4. Repeat at least 3 more times and notice the change in how you feel.

Ask yourself:  Am I doing this because I love myself or I hate myself?

How often does your motivation to eat nutritious foods and workout more come from a place of hatred? Hate is a powerful but non sustainable fuel. It may get you going but it will never last. Wanting to be the best version of yourself, eating foods and exercising in a way that makes you feel good and coming at it all from a place of loving yourself IS sustainable.

You’ve tried hating your body in order to love it and that didn't work.

Why not try focusing on what feels good from a place of love and see what happens.

What are holding onto in your wardrobe that needs to go?

Are you guilty of holding onto clothes that are too small for them in hopes that one day you will fit into them again??  Be honest, how do you feel when you look at those clothes that are too small?

Do you feel empowered and like you want to make a change in your life? Or do you feel disempowered? Likely the latter. My tip to you is to donate your clothes that no longer fit. Don't keep them around letting them bully you and tell you what to do and how to feel. Wear the clothes that make you feel good, confident and ready to take on the world.
